Native of Syracuse Ordained a Priest

Communications Office | 9 years ago

Christopher Ballard, a native of Syracuse, New York will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Syracuse this Saturday, June 5. Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse, will be the main celebrant at the Mass of Ordination at 10am in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Downtown Syracuse. After the Mass, the newly ordained priest will be handed a white envelope containing his first assignment as a priest of the Diocese of Syracuse.

Christopher is a native son of St. Augustine’s Church in Baldwinsville. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from Fordham University. He attended Fordham while living at the College Seminary in Yonkers. He received his Masters in Divinity and Bachelors in Sacred Theology (S.T.B) from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore Maryland. While studying to be a priest, he spent a required pastoral year at St. James Church in Johnson City where he worked with the Spanish population, St. James School students and parishioners. He is fluent in Spanish and has special interests in sports, making films, going to Yankee games and traveling. When asked why he chose the priesthood, he stated,” It is hard to explain, but the best way that I can is by saying that I know in my heart that it is what I need to do. How do two people know that they are perfect for each other and want to get married? There are signs that both experience, but in the end it is because they know it in their hearts.” Once Christopher is ordained a priest, he will celebrate his first Mass at St. James in Johnson City at 2pm on Sunday June 6, 2010.

Media is welcome to cover the Ordination Mass. Please do not use the center aisle or approach the altar area during the Mass. For more information, contact Danielle E. Cummings, Assistant Chancellor/ Director of Communications at 315. 470.1476.
