Catholic Conference hails passage of NYS DREAM Act

The New York State Catholic Conference welcomed the passage of the New York State DREAM Act Jan. 24, calling it “a strong example of legislation that nurtures real progress, based on respect of human life and the dignity of each person, compassion, service, community and opportunity for everyone.”

The legislation allows “young people who have demonstrated a commitment to education and who are of good moral character to access financial aid opportunities without regard to immigration status” and creates “a mechanism to raise money for college scholarships for the children of immigrants,” according to the Conference’s memo of support for the bill.

“Today’s passage of the Jose Peralta NYS DREAM Act is a strong example of legislation that nurtures real progress, based on respect of human life and the dignity of each person, compassion, service, community and opportunity for everyone. This legislation will open doors to education that will transform lives and help individuals, families and communities thrive. As we honor and pay tribute to the memory of Senator Jose Peralta, we also pay tribute to the long history of Latino legislators and activists of all backgrounds, who worked tirelessly for many years, so that this day could become a reality.”
